Do you ever turn your work into pattern? It is something I have been playing with on and off for a while now. I think it is a fabulous way to extend the life of your artwork and create something new from the work you have already done. Do you remember the Art Journal page cushions I made way back in January 2016 with Snapfish? Well it is a similar thing but this time I’ve been playing with making repeat patterns using my art.
And I thought it would be fun to share some of the results of this pattern work and challenge you to have a go with your art too, if you aren’t already. Perfect timing as the weekend is upon us so what is stopping you?!
For my repeat pattern share today I’ve used the same large cheese plant leaf that I used in my 5 Minute Journal – Quick Cut Outs video from a couple of weeks ago using some of the DIY Patterned Papers I’ve been working with recently.
I added another leaf using the same papers as well as some cheese plant flower shapes too and scanned all the cut outs so that I could manipulate them into a digital repeat pattern using Photoshop Elements.
And I’m sure you already know that once you have your pattern you can always upload it to one of the print on demand outlets like Society6 or Spoonflower, (there are lots of others too) so even earn a little cash from your designs or get them made into your own bespoke soft furnishings if you like!
Here is my pattern first in it’s original colour then underneath that I’ve changed the colours to match the Pantone colour of the Year – Greenery – to see how it would look.
Which do you prefer?
Last weekend we went to the Josef Frank exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum in Bermondsey, London, which was pretty amazing and full of colour. I think this pattern is inspired by Josef Frank’s large floral motif designs.
I used the mock-up facility on Society6 to see how the pattern would look on products. It definitely gives it a new lease on life don’t you think?
So my challenge/ inspiration to get you creating this weekend/ week is to make a repeat pattern!
You do not have to make a digital pattern, you can do it by hand, low tech is perfectly fine! Then load it up to Instagram or facebook or wherever you like to hang out, to share and then tag me in.
