Show Your Face

Hello wonderful Facers, it is amazing to think that we are at the end of April and next week is May isn’t it? As next week is May we will be running an optional prompt for anyone who wants to use it to inspire their work for the month and that prompt is ‘Head Positions’ (more details below). So have a think what you might want to do for that prompt if you are going to use it!

But that is next week, are you ready for this week’s sharing?

Let’s do it!

First up the admin…

Schedule:

  • Head Positions – May 2016 (try different head potions through the month. Suggested by June Walker)
  •  Quick Draw Faces – July 2016 (set a timer to say 10-15 min – or less if you dare! – and draw a face or several faces in that time. Suggested by Gibby Frogett).
  • Change Hands – September 2016 (try using your non-dominant hand to draw/ paint / make your face this month. Suggested by Hazel Agnew).

Remember all are optional prompts, you don’t have to use them, they are there if you fancy playing, if not just link up your usual work as normal.

Don’t forget:

  • Show Your Face is a community link up for portrait work in any style or medium.
  • the aims are to share, learn, practise, inspire, and be inspired.
  • to make sure that the face artwork is yours, if you use any stamps or templates to build the face they should be designed by you.
  • the link is open from 10 am (BST) every Friday and stays open for a week, so link away.
  • finished pieces, works in progress or retro posts (i.e. older works, not from this week) are all welcome.
  • to link back to the link blog post here for that week.
  • Spread the word on your blog/social media outlets and use the #ShowYourFaceFriday hashtag in social media.
  • There is a prompt every other month. Using the prompts is totally optional and just there if you fancy playing along. You can still post your face work even if you haven’t used the prompt.

My Share This Week…

A mixed media portrait sketch by Kim Dellow

I’ve just started going to my first ever formal art course, well since school that is and I don’t really count school as it was so very, very (very) long ago and I actually dropped art as soon as I was able to, but that is another story for a different time. So I am counting this course as my first formal art course. It is run by my local council and is all about portraiture and emotion, sounds good doesn’t it?

The second class was this week and we had a sitter to draw from, which was fun. We spent the class working to different set timed poses, 1min, 5min, 10min, 15min and 30min. This one was the 30 minute pose but I actually did a couple of sketches in that time so it was more like a 15min sketch. I’ve used watercolour, a water soluble graphite pencil and a charcoal pencil for this piece.

Have you been to any in real life portrait classes? If you have, what lessons did you learn from them, either positive or negative, that you are still using to make your art today?

Over To You…

Link your faces artwork and spread the word on your blog and/or social media, hashtag #ShowYourFaceFriday. Please do let anyone you think would be interested in sharing their portraits know about our community here.

I always think though that the older you are when you decide to learn something, the more you enjoy it – you've decided it is really what you want to do! Love your face. Never done any formal art courses, and I would be too embarassed to even try! Love this. xx

This portrait is just fabulous in its simplicity-something I have such a hard time with! I have never taken any formal art courses. Enjoy!

  3. Julie Ann Lee

I've never done any formal art classes, though I'm tempted to try these days! I've just been joining in the #30Faces30Days challenge so I'm linking up with some of my faces from this this week. I really like what you created in your class – really nice sketch. I do hope you find the course enriching: I'm sure you will. x
