Show Your Face

Hey Facers, September is here which means no more ‘Show Your Face Inspired By’ and back to the regular ‘Show Your Face’. Wahoo!

Before we rush on I would really like you to take a minute to think about what you got out of it ‘Show Your Face Inspired By’. If you didn’t get a chance to join in then don’t worry, think about what you get from looking at other Facers’ artwork in general.

What I Got From Show Your Face Inspired By
Here is my share of what I got from it. For me I found that ‘Show Your Face Inspired By’ really made me think about my process and style through trying to examine and include other people’s style and processes into my work. It also gave me an added appreciation of how amazing you all are and how talented you are. You guys ROCK! Seriously!

I also loved watching people join in and connect up to fellow Facers. Ok, I will let you into a little secret I had another reason for insisting that you link up to the fellow Facer you where inspired by other than it is the right thing to do and a nice thing to do too! You may or may not be aware of this but linking to each other blogs is a great way of adding authenticity and visibility to all of our blogs in the eyes of the search engines.

It is more of a blogging technical reason and might not be of interest to some of you but I kind of hope that it helps all our blog without us realising. I’m not saying go mad and fill your blog posts with links out but every now and then it can’t hurt now can it and, as I said before, it is both the right thing to do and a nice thing to do, blogging is a community after all!

Facers Needs Your Input!
I would like to run ‘Show Your Face Inspired By’ again in the next few months, but this is a community group and if you all hated it then I won’t run it! Majority rule!

I was also thinking of running other occasional, month long, optional join in, prompts like ‘In The Style Of’ where we take a month to examine our favourite artists and try and incorporate or examine what they do through our own face practise. Or maybe a month focusing on how to do eyes, or noses or anatomy, or stylised faces. There is a lot we could cover!

The idea is to take us out of our comfort zone, make us re-examine our own work and hopefully push some of our boundaries as this is often when we learn and make the biggest improvements.

I’m assuming that whether you are a newbie (like me) or a hardened portrait professional you probably want to improve your art and be the best that you can be? Right?

So are you up for it? Is it something you would like to engage in? Shall we do it here on Show Your Face?

Let me know. Remember – Majority rule!

Also let me know if you have ideas of what you would like to study for a month with Facers, you can leave a comment, social media me with the #ShowYourFace Hashtag or even email me.

Thanks Facers!

Ok, on with this week’s Show Your Face…

Don’t forget:

  • Show Your Face is a community link up for portrait work in any style or medium.
  • the aims are to share, learn, practise, inspire, and be inspired.
  • to make sure that the face artwork is yours, if you use any stamps or templates to build the face they should be designed by you.
  • the link is open from 10 am (BST) every Friday and stays open for a week, so link away.
  • finished pieces, works in progress or retro posts (i.e. older works, not from this week) are all welcome.
  • to link back to the link blog post here for that week.
  • Spread the word on your blog/social media outlets and use the #ShowYourFace hashtag in social media.

My Share this week…

face sketches in pencil

My share this week actually carries on from the work that I did in the last Show Your Face. This time it is a study from a tea-room and just of one face. I tried three sketches starting from the top left and working clock wise. The picture at the bottom was the last one and was the one that was nearer to the look of the face and the tilt that I was going for. Took me three attempts but I got there!

Oh and the chewed pencil? That was one of my cats! She seems to have a taste for twigs and the occasional pencil.

Over To You…
Link your faces artwork, leave a comment on what you got from ‘Show Your Face Inspired By’ and if you would like to do it again.

Ok, so I know that some of you just scrolled down to link your face but please do take the time to read the first part of this blog post, Facers Needs Your Input!

Love your face sketches, and I think inspired by could be repeated again, perhaps inspired by famous artists, from whom we can learn so much. Have a great weekend, hugs, Valerie

Thanks Valerie, that is great! Your vote has been counted LOL! Have a fun weekend. Kx

  2. Arnoldo L. Romero, MLA

I love drawing and painting portraits, so I've always enjoyed doing studies of the masters' work. Therefore, that's my vote. Thanks for hosting this marvelous venue and Blessings!

Brilliant! Thanks Arnoldo, I have noted your vote 🙂 Have a lovely and creative weekend. Kx

I like the idea of "in the style of" and "stylized faces". Must admit I didn't do the "inspired by"-thing last month, not because it wasn't interesting (I am very inspired by all I see here each week!) but because i had to get things ready for my markets, and I can hardly take something there that was inspired by someone else. Not sure whether the next months will be different, since the busy season is starting. Since I always draw or paint faces it's easy for me to link up to Show your face, but not always easy to participate in the challenges. I'll do my best …. Great sketch btw ….

That is fabulous, your votes have been counted! Thanks and no need to worry as it really is a join in if and when you can, no pressure thing. Life is sometimes just too busy! Kx

  4. Suz

I like all your suggestions but what if you suggested something each week in stead of for a whole month. Just a thought but it might make it interesting. I love your sketch! Everything you do is so different. Thanks for hosting and I have had a lot of fun.

    1. Kim Dellow

Thanks Suz, well so far I've kind of kept it on a loose one month system so that people can join in if they have the time at some point in that month. Well we have only done it once so far so it isn't set in stone or anything! I'm not sure I could keep up with a weekly theme myself! LOL! But I have an idea, perhaps we could have a month of doing a different theme each week to get everyone working hard! Nice idea! Thanks for your vote! Kx

  5. Giggles

I love your perspective running this challenge. I love the idea of options. Being able to use your own face for that week or styling it after your favorite artist. I am so happy you endorse and promote social media with verve. It's more important than people have yet to realize. This is a happy place with no pressure thanks to you! Thanks for sharing your authentic self and hosting!!

    Hugs Giggles

Ahh thanks Giggles, I'm so glad you like it and are happy to help build this! Your votes have been counted 🙂 Kx

  6. Janet

I've been absent for a few weeks but I'm back again. I like your sketches…that's mostly what I did, too. It was a busy week for me and a couple of quick sketches was all I had time for.

    1. Kim Dellow

It is brilliant to have you back Janet, we missed you! Glad you had a little time to squeeze a face in! Kx

  7. Susana Magenheimer

Cool observation sketching! I would like to see a focus on eyes, nose mouth etc like draw the eyes 3 ways traditional, cartoon and maybe a none traditional random way Enjoyed the inspired by always good to grow

    1. Kim Dellow

Oooo really nice idea Susana, thank you, your vote has been counted! Kx

  8. Carmen Medlin

I love the tea room lady sketches! It's fun to catch people in the moment like that… and then when you look at the sketch years later, the whole memory comes right back. 🙂 Haha about your chewed pencil… my kitty never ate them but he would try and bat at them while I was trying to write when he was young!

    1. Kim Dellow

So true Carmen it is better than photos coz you remember the action of doing it like a muscle memory or something. I really should do more!
      Kitties! LOL!
      Kx

  9. Julie Ann Lee

Hi Kim! I'm sorry I'm so late. It's been one of those weeks again! Oh dear, aren't they all? Anyway, I love your sketches. I really must take a pencil and paper with me wherever I go. I keep meaning to! By the way, I love the idea of 'inspired by' different artists, in the style of and so on! I would love to have a go at that, so please include my vote for that one, if it's not too late. I also really enjoyed being inspired by each other's work. If I had not been doing a course on line, I would have done more of that. xx

    1. Kim Dellow

You are never too late Julie Ann, in fact I can beat you one late, I'm always battling my face to the last minute but as I'm hosting it it just looks like I'm on time LOL! Your vote has been counted!
      Kx

  10. Cris G

Well, I'm not sure of having the right to vote… I joined just once and I really don't know how often I will be able to participate. Still, I like the idea of 'inspired by' different artists but also liked the 'inspired by' other Facers. I believe that any of them will help us improving.
Love your study, I think that this kind of sketchbook is great to catch expressions and movement in a fast way, something I really need to work.
Thank you for being so determined to help us grow 🙂

    1. Kim Dellow

Of course you have a vote in Show Your Face even if you aren't able to join in a lot all comments are welcome and thanks, it has been counted (sorry it took me awhile to reply, I've been a bit swamped!). Kx
